Gangtey Lodge is the culmination of a journey that began back in 2003 by owners Khin Omar Win and Brett Melzer, founders of Balloons over Bagan, Myanmar. Over the next few years and countless forays into remote valleys across the country, they finally settled on the mystical and pristine Gangtey valley with their partner Yeshey Norbu.
Here the seeds were sown to create a unique, and luxurious Bhutanese farmhouse experience, that would be architecturally pure, provide the warm welcome of a private home and inspire guests to immerse themselves in everyday Bhutanese rural life. Mary Lou Thomson took on the role of Architect for the Gangtey Lodge, in what was to be her first totally independent hotel project. Together, they shared the same passion to create a unique Bhutanese experience that reflects its rich local culture. Today, Gangtey Lodge offers every possible comfort that one should expect in a fine country home. Its remote location in the heart of Bhutan, allows guests not only to immerse themselves in everyday Bhutanese rural life but to bring positive benefits to the local community.
All 12 Farmhouse Suites command sweeping views of the valley below and of the Gangtey Goenpa, or monastery just a 10-minute walk away. Heated hand cut stone floors, deep bathtubs overlooking the valley and wood burning stoves, or “Bhukaris”, complete the sense of luxury and coziness.
